
This is the moment in time, ten seconds earlier, which is frozen in Pete’s mind. He still sees the oak cabinet, pristine and familiar, carefully dusted and arranged ‘just so’ by his mother’s doting hand. It wasn’t his fault he had missed the catch.
The offending ball rolled to a gentle stop at his feet.
